Bekins / Holt Hall
As part of the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies, you'll learn to design your own curriculum and explain your academic goals and rationale in writing, then share them with a community of advisors who support you along the way. You'll revisit and refine your plans as your interests grow, always connecting your studies to your personal and professional goals. This process is transformative and rewarding, giving you the skills and confidence to thrive in whatever path you choose next.
Johnston students live and learn together in the Johnston Complex, home to the Bekins and Holt residence halls. Inside, you'll find a coffeehouse, meditation room, computer center, art studio, music room, classrooms, and faculty offices. From discussing current events after class to sharing music on the Bekins porch, students and professors come together in the Johnston Complex to exchange ideas, spark creativity, and build connections.
As a Johnston student, your education will extend far past the traditional classroom walls. You’ll apply what you learn in class to the real world through internships, hands-on projects, or global opportunities. Many students study internationally with one of Redlands’ study abroad partners, including the University’s Salzburg Semester program, developing a global mindset that prepares them for careers and life in an interconnected world.
For Johnston Center for Integrative Studies sophomore Caden Henderson ’27, combining Redlands’ unique approach to personalized education with his passion for sports has resulted in an academic roadmap toward making his lifelong dream of becoming a sports broadcaster a reality.
The Johnston Center empowers students to design interdisciplinary degree programs tailored to their goals. Henderson, who began pursuing his broadcasting aspirations interviewing athletes and sports personalities on his YouTube channel, “CadenCenter,” found Johnston to be the perfect place to merge his career ambitions with his education.
Johnston graduates pursue careers as diverse as the degrees they designed. What sets them apart is the customized education that prepares them to stand out to graduate schools and employers. Explore how alumni are putting their Johnston degrees into action.
“The Johnston community is incredible. Personally and socially, navigating such a close and passionate community has been wonderful. The academic freedom — from the big picture of creating my own major to the small and intentional choices about how to modify each class I am taking to accommodate my interests — my experience has been profoundly motivating.”
Andries Castellano ’26
Emphasis: Psychology of Masculinities and Access to Mental Health Care
“I chose Johnston because I tend to flourish in communities, and the interdisciplinary environment was exciting to my first-year self. It is everything I could have hoped for and more. I’m surrounded by a beautiful intergenerational community. If you can dream it, you can do it at the Johnston Center.”
Angela Bozman ’25

“The highlight of my experience with Johnston would be the collective quiet moments spent with friends in our community. Johnston facilitates exploration into their students’ passions, encourages people to expand their views, and helps them find their way. I’m able to pursue interests in both software and Japanese language alongside the general culture.”
Sim Sim ’25
Emphasis: Computer Science Meets Japanese Culture
“I chose Johnston because it provided a great opportunity to learn what I wanted to learn alongside other passionate people with a wide range of interests. I also graduated from high school during the pandemic, so I was attracted to Johnston for the consensus-based communal living situation. Getting to live so close to my friends and participate in the challenges of creating the community we want to live in is one of the great privileges of my undergraduate education.”
Sadie Forkner ’25
Emphasis: Interdisciplinary Writing
