For Johnston Center for Integrative Studies sophomore Caden Henderson ’27, combining Redlands’ unique approach to personalized education with his passion for sports has resulted in an academic roadmap toward making his lifelong dream of becoming a sports broadcaster a reality.

The Johnston Center empowers students to design interdisciplinary degree programs tailored to their goals. Henderson, who began pursuing his broadcasting aspirations interviewing athletes and sports personalities on his YouTube channel, “CadenCenter,” found Johnston to be the perfect place to merge his career ambitions with his education.

“The University has allowed me to continue my broadcasting career and make invaluable connections,” Henderson said. “It’s the best situation I could possibly imagine, especially since there isn’t a traditional sports broadcasting major.”

A key to Henderson’s journey has been mentorship, which he said has been crucial to his growth. From collaborating with Lance Franey, the University of Redlands’ director of athletic communications, to receiving guidance from Johnston professor Kelly Hankin, Henderson’s support system has helped him thrive.

“Lance has had the biggest impact on my experience,” Henderson shared. “He ‘gave me the keys’ to broadcasting and announcing games through the Bulldog Sports Network. Even before I started college, I emailed him to explore opportunities, and he was incredibly welcoming and encouraging.”

In the classroom, Hankin has played an instrumental role in helping Henderson find courses that align with his aspirations. “Both Lance and Professor Hankin have become significant influences, guiding me toward my goals and supporting my growth,” he said.

Henderson encourages future Bulldogs to follow their dreams and take advantage of the University’s “design your own degree” educational model through Johnston. “When you know what you want to do, dive in and enjoy the journey,” he said. “Redlands can adapt to your needs, and the community is here to help you.”
