Truesdail Center Clinic

Part of the Redlands mission is to provide needed services to the community, and the Truesdail Center helps accomplish this mission. We give our graduate students the chance to directly apply what they've learned in a rewarding, community-facing environment.

Disorders and disabilities seen at the Truesdail Center are: child language, speech articulation/phonology, hearing impairment, swallowing disorders, traumatic brain injury (TBI), CVA (stroke), stuttering, voice disorders, language and learning disorders, cleft palate and autism.

Mission Statement

The department provides academic and clinical preparation in communication sciences and disorders at the undergraduate and graduate level. Students at the undergraduate level are prepared to enter the field at the bachelor's level, to enter other health-care related fields at the undergraduate level or to continue toward the master's degree in communication sciences and disorders.

Instructional approaches in the department closely follow the University's strategic plan that embraces 6 core values: foster student success, personalized education, integrative experiences, diversity, innovation and creativity, high ethical standards, and an academic atmosphere that is grounded in the liberal arts and sciences.

We also strive to provide quality speech and hearing services to the community through our state-of-the-art speech and hearing clinic. One of the goals in the graduate program is to prepare the student to have the academic credentials to be eligible to obtain the California State License, California SLPS credential, and the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Academic and clinical standards in the graduate program will be consistent with the accreditation standards of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Truesdail Therapy Programs

At Truesdail Center for Communicative Disorders, we design a therapy program after a full evaluation. The evaluation process includes an exploration of the history of the problem, diagnostic testing, and a staff conference with the client and family.

A therapy program, which includes involvement in one or more of the following options, will be designed for the client:

• Individual sessions scheduled one or two times a week
• Small group sessions scheduled one or two times a week
• Adult support groups
• Parent training groups

Referrals

Although no referral is necessary, referrals to Truesdail Center are accepted from private and professional agencies, school districts, individuals and advocate groups.

Parkinson Disease Therapy Program

It's important for people living with Parkinson's to improve and maintain their voices in order to avoid potential speech and swallowing difficulties. Parkinson Voice Project® has developed a comprehensive speech therapy program —SPEAK OUT!®—that combines education, individual speech therapy, and group sessions in order to strengthen communication skills and provide support. The program is offered through a relationship with the University of Redlands and Human Good – Plymouth Village. 

The program is facilitated by graduate students who are supervised by licensed speech-language therapists in the University of Redlands, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders program.
