California Teaching Performance Assessment

The CalTPA is designed to measure the candidate's knowledge, skills and ability in relation to California's Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs). While enrolled in their teacher preparation program, specifically in the fieldwork seminar, candidates will receive helpful hints and tips to complete and pass their CalTPA cycles. Seminar instructors, University Supervisors, and Cooperating Teachers are provided training prior to and during the semester with guidance to support candidates through fieldwork and navigating the CalTPAs.

Learn more about the CalTPA including credential areas, submission deadlines, preparation materials, fees, payment policy, registration and more on the following webpages for respective exams:

CalTPA Results

From your CTC Exams account, you may view, print, and save your test results. Your testing history for all tests taken, reported as pass/fail status, is always available to you through your account.

Test results are available for 2 years in your Pearson account. After the 2-year period, additional copies may be requested via the process outlined by the CTC on the Request a Copy of Your Test Results webpage.

It is advised that students always maintain a record of their proof of CALTPA completion in their personal files. Evidence of passing the CalTPA is required to apply for a preliminary teaching credential.

Options After Non-Passing CalTPA

Students who do not meet the scoring requirements of their CalTPA should reach out to the CalTPA Coordinator for consultation and guidance on the next steps for approaching the assessment. Students have three options:

Some teacher candidates may decide to proceed with resubmitting their CalTPA without the support of the School of Education faculty depending on factors such as time of year or next available deadline for submission. Even so, The Office of Licensures and Credentialing believes it is in the best interest of the teacher candidate and encourages all candidates to discuss their plan with the CalTPA Coordinator.

Remediation is individualized support with an assigned remediation specialist. Remediation begins with a one-on-one meeting to discuss support needs and/or plan for resubmission of the CalTPA.

Upon request, the CalTPA Coordinator will respond to the teacher candidate within 48 hours to provide an assigned remediation specialist as well as the date, time and location of the remediation workshop. The assigned remediation specialist will contact the teacher candidate (within 48-hours) to arrange a date, time, and location for one-on-one remediation. Following the remediation session, teacher candidates are required to re-register for the failed CalTPA or EdSpec CalTPA instructional cycle and pay $150 to resubmit the failed instructional cycle. In addition to the registration fee(s), teacher candidates are required to pay a $50 remediation fee.
