Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) workarounds for China

University employees and students are required to use Duo MFA when accessing University of Redlands applications and systems from off campus.

The recommended method for Duo MFA is the Duo Mobile app for iOS and Android. However, specific rules and regulations in China may cause limitations when using the app or your cell phone.

Key issues and workarounds:

  1. Google Play Store unavailable in China:

    • Android users can download the Duo app APK directly from Duo's website.
    • This does not affect iOS devices.

  2. No Google Play services on Android:

    • Duo push functionality won’t work. Use Duo "fetch" instead (select Duo push, open the app, swipe down to fetch, and approve manually).

  3. Phone callback issues:

    • Use an alternate second factor such as Duo push, fetch, a texted passcode, or an in-app passcode.

Travel tips for China:

  • Download and install the app before your trip to avoid problems.
  • Visit the ITS Tech Support office to get a keychain fob token, which works without internet or cellular access. The Duo app's passcode feature also functions similarly.
