Internships and Opportunities in Southern California

Explore exciting internships and opportunities in Southern California to enhance your artistic journey.

We think of our Southern California location as a natural laboratory. The surrounding region offers examples of severe environmental degradation as well as some of the most innovative and technologically advanced solutions in the world.

Just 35 miles from campus sits the country's largest wind farm with over 1,000 wind turbines, and less than 10 miles from campus is the San Bernardino National Forest, home to more endangered species than any other national forest. Southern California's highest peak, Mt. San Gorgonio, is located here, along with the largest roadless area south of the Sierra Nevada. Beyond the range is some of the most magnificent desert country in the southwest: Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks, the new Mojave National Preserve and the massive Anza-Borrego State Park.

The Pacific Ocean lies 80 miles to the west, providing numerous marine ecosystems to explore, along with excellent opportunities to observe some of the country's best and worst examples of coastal zone management.

Few areas of the world can offer such challenging environmental problems and solutions, in combination with such a beautiful expanse of mountain, ocean and desert wilderness.

Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action (ANCA)
Now accepting ANCA Interns for Spring 2023! Please contact Professor Rountree at valerie_rountree@redlands.edu for more information.
Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action (ANCA) is a grassroots, volunteer organization working to bring climate action to the neighborhood level and to increase community-wide awareness and understanding of the climate crisis through a broad-based community education program. This fall we will begin to hold Climate Action Forums in interested neighborhoods.  These are opportunities for neighborhoods to develop their own action plans for preparing for the impacts of climate change.
Esri has gifted ANCA with the premium version of ArcGIS Hub, which we are just beginning to develop.  There are many opportunities for GIS and Environmental Studies students to help in areas such as developing content for any of ANCA’s 15 Climate Initiatives, developing a Hub-based reporting format for neighborhoods to share accomplishments on the Initiatives, helping to further develop and put a comprehensive Resource Directory on the Hub, creating story maps about what local people are doing to prepare for climate change, and developing apps to easily visualize neighborhood reports, just to name a few.

California has some of the most progressive environmental regulations in the country – even the world! Consultants might collect data on vegetation and wildlife, develop site maps, and prepare detailed scientific reports to inform development plans and reduce potential environmental impacts of land use changes.

ECORP Consulting, Inc. Is a local consulting firm (with additional branches outside of Redlands) that was founded by a UR alum in 1987. They regularly have projects for student interns using and developing skills in field work, GIS, and writing – they also often hire recent grads!
