Higher Access, Higher Earnings: Redlands ranks among top colleges and universities for student outcomes

May 13, 2025

University of Redlands has been named one of the nation’s Higher Access, Higher Earnings institutions in the newly released 2025 Carnegie Classifications, a recognition that positions Redlands among the top colleges and universities driving meaningful student outcomes through educational access and career success.

Redlands received the classification of “Opportunity College and University – Higher Access, Higher Earnings,” a distinction shared by just 16% of classified institutions nationwide. The designation is part of the revamped Carnegie system, which now includes a focus on how well colleges serve students from underrepresented backgrounds and how effectively they launch graduates into competitive career paths.

“This designation reflects the heart of our strategic plan—to increase access, expand programs aligned with workforce needs, and prepare students for meaningful careers,” said University of Redlands President Krista Newkirk. “It’s a powerful affirmation of our efforts to serve our students and deliver a high-impact education that creates lasting opportunity. We’re proud to be recognized as a national model for innovation, and results.”

That recognition is evident in the lives and careers of Redlands alumni. Many describe their time at the University as a launching pad—preparing them to approach their careers with professionalism, personal growth, and a strong sense of purpose.

“A degree from University of Redlands demonstrates you’re ready for what’s next in our rapidly evolving world,” Kelsey Myers ’01, a senior media strategist at Esri said. “Not just as a graduate, but as a leader. In a world of change, Bulldogs get it done.”

For others, the Redlands experience helped shape identity and lifelong purpose.

“Choosing U of R was one of the most transformative decisions of my life,” Sara Guerra ’04, ’06, said. For the last 19 years, Guerra has been teaching fourth grade at Bryn Mawr Elementary. “Redlands gave me a sense of purpose, a professional identity, and a lifelong connection to a place that believed in my potential even before I fully believed in it myself.”

The Student Access and Earnings Classification draws from national datasets including IPEDS, the U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard, and Census Bureau data. Institutions are measured by the share of undergraduate students from low-income and historically underserved backgrounds, as well as the median earnings of graduates eight years after enrollment, contextualized by regional economic benchmarks.
