College of Arts and Sciences Study Away

Our objective in the CAS Study Away Office is that every CAS undergraduate student has the opportunity to have a significant international or domestic off-campus experience during their time at Redlands.

We see this as a critical and integral part of their liberal arts education. Available to students from all CAS departments and programs, off-campus study provides a unique opportunity for academic and personal learning and growth that is not possible to gain while on campus in Redlands. The benefits are numerous, from increased language acquisition and intercultural experience to greater personal resilience and maturity.

Semester-Long Study Away Programs

With over 60 programs in over 30 countries, the U of R provides enriching semester-long academic opportunities for all majors and minors.

Our programs allow students to grow personally and professionally by offering internships, research opportunities, service-learning placements, enhanced language learning and much more. We partner with many leading universities and study away program providers to be able to offer such a wide variety. This chart compares different aspects of a study away program based on program type.

Our list of programs have divided our programs into the following three categories for application purposes – A, B and C. Please read about each category below as this information will help you understand the types of program offered and the competitive nature of some programs.

Category A Programs

This category includes the U of R’s Salzburg Semester program and exchange and direct enroll options with partner universities. Participants on the Salzburg program will study at the U of R’s international campus in Salzburg, Austria. Participants on exchange and direct enroll programs, will study at local universities and have opportunities to engage with the university community and student clubs.

Category B Programs

This category includes programs through study away partner organizations. Depending on the program, students may be studying with other students from around the U.S. or with local students. Some programs will have a set curriculum for students to choose courses from while others will allow students to take courses at local universities.

Category C Programs

This category includes programs that have limited enrollment for U of R students. Applying to a Category C program is competitive process. Students can find the enrollment capacity for each Category C program in the program description in our list of programs. These programs, like Category A and B programs are offered through exchange and direct enroll partners as well as partner organizations. Due to the limited enrollment capacity of category C programs, students applying to a Category C program must select a second choice program from either Category A or B programs in their study away applications. Students should research their second choice program option and make sure it will also work for them academically as they will be considered for that program, if not selected for their first choice Category C program.

Getting Started

Step 1: Attend a Study Away Information Session

With over 60 semester programs and 8-15 May Term travel courses to choose from, the process of figuring out what program would work best for you can feel overwhelming.

By attending a study away information session you learn about the different approved semester and May Term study away program opportunities, the application process and timeline, costs of study away, how to fund the experience and much more.

List of upcoming study away information sessions can be found on our Events page.

Step 2: Meet with Advisors to Discuss Your Options

You should meet with your academic advisor(s) to discuss when the best time to study away is for your major/minor/emphasis, understand what types of courses you should look to take while studying away and talk about possible study away programs. As part of the U of R semester study away application process, you will need to submit a Study Away Academic Advisor Approval Form signed by your advisor.

You can also meet with CAS Study Away staff and/or study away ambassadors to learn more about our program offerings, study away scholarship/grant opportunities, the application process and to get any study away questions answered.

May Term travel course enrollment takes place from September to mid-October and is managed by the course faculty leader.  You should contact the course faculty leader directly for more details about their application and enrollment process for the course.

Fall and spring semester study away program applications are open from early September to early December. You must apply a year in advance of going abroad.

Step 4: Confirm That You Have a Valid Passport

You are required to have a valid passport to study away on programs outside the U.S. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the end date of your program. Resources for how to apply for or renew a passport can be found here. Passport processing times have increased substantially (routine service is taking up to 13 weeks and expedited service can take up to 9 weeks). Apply now if you need a new passport.

Study Away Costs & Financial Aid

The University of Redlands has long maintained a regular on-campus semester fee structure for CAS undergraduate students who study away for an academic term. This financial structure is an equity-based model which maximizes the possibility of all students electing to spend a semester living and learning away from campus and in a distinct culture.

Students will be billed for their semester away via their MyRedlands accounts. Students are billed on the regular University billing cycle and are required to make full payment or enter into a payment plan by established university wide dates.
