MDIV Field Education

As an MDiv student, Field Education will be an important component of your MDiv degree program. You must complete one internship or one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education to meet your minimum field education requirement. However, you may wish to pursue a more robust field education plan, combining multiple field education experiences. 

Designing Your Field Education Plan

Below are the steps to follow to design your unique field education plan:
  1. Complete at least 24 units of course work including Orientation to Theological Education and any coursework that will be especially relevant for your desired field education setting, such as preaching, worship, or pastoral care.
  2. Fill out Internship Questionnaire.
  3. Make an appointment with the Rev. Linda Lane-Bortell, Director of Field Education.
  4. If you are seeking ordination, consult with your ordaining body on their internship and/or CPE requirements.

Internship Site Guidelines

Any accredited Clinical Pastoral Education program, including the SFTS curriculum-based CPE program, is eligible to be considered an approved field education site for a SFTS intern. If you are considering a church, nonprofit, or other ministry setting, you will want to look for the following qualities:
  1. A mission in line with your long-term vocational and career goals.

  2. A stable setting where you’ll be able to complete your requirement (9 months of part-time internship or full-time summer).
  3. Access to a supportive mentor who will serve as your supervisor. This supervisor must be an ordained minister as laid out in the Supervisor Information Packet.
  4. Offers a variety of ministry experiences, such as preaching and worship leadership, pastoral care, teaching, group facilitation and administrative duties. 
  5. A component of public leadership that can be evaluated by members in the community served (i.e. preaching, teaching, organizing and chairing public meetings).
  6. Time for reflection with the supervisor.
Those in a denominational ordination process would be wise to gain approval for the internship from the denominational governing body first. Failure to do so will not disqualify the site as a possibility for the SFTS program but may result in extra work for the student.

Our Director of Field Education, Rev. Linda Lane-Bortell, is also Pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Terra Linda, a position she has enjoyed since 2005. Linda grew up in Salinas, CA, received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Irvine, and her M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary. As a M. Div. student, Linda completed five separate internships, a key part of her education and call discernment. She has pastored five congregations in New Jersey, Illinois, and California. Currently Linda is a Doctor of Ministry Candidate here at the Graduate School of Theology.
