This foundational module prepares GIS managers to confidently engage in strategic conversations within their organizations, especially where GIS is not yet fully understood. Students will learn how to identify organizational goals and challenges, articulate the business value of GIS, define success metrics, and prioritize initiatives. The course culminates in the development and presentation of a high-level geospatial strategy roadmap tailored to their organizational context.
Building on the high-level roadmap developed in the first module, this course guides students through the process of transforming strategy into action. Students will refine their roadmap into a comprehensive implementation plan that addresses key elements such as people, processes, technology, potential risks, and organizational challenges. The course also covers how to build a compelling business case to support funding and resource allocation. Each student will present their finalized implementation plan upon completion.
The final module focuses on translating the implementation plan into effective action. Students will dive into the practical aspects of project execution, including understanding contract types, selecting the appropriate project management methodology, tracking and monitoring outcomes, and creating meaningful reports for stakeholders. To apply these concepts, each student will develop and deliver a project Kickoff Meeting presentation to the class at the end of the course.
Upon completion, students will be able to:
