Dear University Community,
I write today to share the sad news of the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. Lowell “Kent” Smith, Professor of Biology. Dr. Smith’s impressive tenure at the University of Redlands spanned over 50 years, beginning with his offer letter, signed by then-President George Armacost in 1967. He was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus in February 2018.
Throughout his remarkable career at the University of Redlands, Dr. Smith taught numerous courses, gaining expertise in computer science and GIS technology. He also spent much of his time fostering the university’s relationship with Esri and utilizing their pioneering GIS technology both in the classroom and beyond, completing several successful research projects using GIS software.
In a 2011 self-evaluation, Dr. Smith expressed his love of teaching and his firm belief that “the best teaching is by example.” Admired by his colleagues for his wide range of knowledge, Dr. Smith inspired both biology and non-biology students. He served as the former chair of the Biology Department and past chair of the Academic Senate, and he was also nominated for an Outstanding Faculty Award in Teaching in 1999.
Known as a “dynamic lecturer,” Dr. Smith regularly used personal anecdotes to bring the study of science to life in the classroom, engaging students in critical thinking. His colleagues also noted that “his syllabi are multi-page masterpieces of all the rules and regulations for successfully completing his classes.”
Dr. Smith received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Knox College and his Ph.D. in plant physiology from Stanford University. He also served in the U.S. Army, receiving a commendation medal for “service while an instructor.”
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church at 115 W. Olive Avenue in Redlands.
