Arroyo Valley High School students are charting their futures in a whole new way thanks to a first-of-its-kind dual credit partnership between the University of Redlands, San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD), and Esri.
The collaboration officially launched October 1 with a spirited signing ceremony at Arroyo Valley’s gym, where students and community members saw firsthand how geographic information systems (GIS) technology connects classrooms to career opportunities.
Through the program, qualifying Arroyo Valley students can take GIS-related college courses during their regular school day—at no cost. These courses count for both high school and college credit, giving students a head start on higher education and a pathway into one of today’s fastest-growing fields.
“Today, we are here to take another step forward,” said University of Redlands President Krista Newkirk. “The Inland Empire is home to Esri, the global leader in GIS technology, and U of R has long been recognized as a national leader in GIS education. Now, together, we are extending that expertise into high school classrooms through the very first dual credit course in the AniVation Tech Academy here at Arroyo Valley.”
The idea for the partnership took root when Arroyo Valley staff visited Esri and saw GIS’s potential to inspire students. With support from SBCUSD leaders, University of Redlands faculty, and Esri partners, the vision quickly became a reality.
“This is yet another avenue for AVHS scholars to be SBCUSD strong and be prepared for both college and career when they graduate high school,” said Superintendent Mauricio Arellano.
Arroyo Valley Principal Manuel Gonzalez, a proud Redlands alumnus, reminded students that they are the center of this opportunity. “You are the reason we are here today, and you are the reason this program will thrive. Your curiosity, drive, and willingness to embrace new opportunities make everything possible.”
The dual credit GIS course is just the beginning. With continued collaboration, the University of Redlands and SBCUSD plan to expand dual credit and dual enrollment offerings that prepare students to discover their potential and shape the future of their communities.
