RENEWAL WEEKEND SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH

3:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m. // Welcome Home
Location: Johnston Complex (Bekins and Holt)

During this period, students, staff, and faculty will welcome you back to Holt and Bekins. Tours of the buildings will be provided by current students. Some faculty will have their doors open for drop-in visits. You can make a name tag for the weekend, and if over 21, we will give you a wristband for the various events. Lawn-based activities will keep the mood light as we start re-connecting and settling back into campus.

5:00p.m. - 6:30 p.m. // Cocktail Reception
Location: New Ann Peppers Lawn
Cost: $20 (walk-ups will be accommodated as possible)

As we move to the new arts complex for the evening’s events, please mix and mingle in our beautiful LEED certified arts center on the south campus. A short walk from complex, Cart Captains will also be available to help those who want or need mobility assistance. Light music will play as we enjoy the landscape and each other’s presence. Passed hors d’oeuvres and light refreshments will keep us nourished while we continue to welcome community members to the event. A cash bar is available for those who choose to drink.

7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. // Kathryn Green Plenary Panel -- Environment : Johnston Location: Glen Wallichs Theater (also available via live-stream: JOHNSTON RENEWAL 55)

A radical experiment is underway in Johnston. This spring, Professor and former Johnston Director, Kathy Ogren, is teaching a new course, Johnston & The One Wild and Precious Life. She is bringing together students from her three decades of teaching, advocates for experimental education who hold Johnston dear, as well as a group of dedicated current students, to share their experience meeting and learning together across generations, time zones, intellectual pursuits, and more. As the syllabus says, “The seminar opens up a space for Johnstonites past and present to document how JC’s emancipatory education is made possible through curriculum, classes, community, negotiated contracts, co-learning and life-long reflection. Now, perhaps more than ever in its history, Johnston’s advocacy of learning generated through the individua land community dialogue challenges the normative dominance of commodified

education.” With this plenary session, we can begin a weekend-long conversation about Environment: Johnston as we remember it, and as it might be in the future.

9:00 p.m. -1:00 a.m. // Porch Party
Location: Bekins Lawn

For many in Johnston, “porch” is both a noun and a verb. A place in front of a building, a space for connection and conversation, and a structure in which integrative living and learning have come together, porch is both a loosely planned adventure and a way to learning beyond the classroom. We’ll have a speaker and an aux cable, light snacks and water, and seats for those who want to take a break from all the action. Save some energy – Saturday is a big day!

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17TH

7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. // Morning Connections
Location: Orton Center

Additional check-in for the Renewal will be available. A “hot cakes buffet” will be provided by the Center, along with coffee, tea, and other morning beverages to get the day going. Maps of campus, a schedule and time to plan a morning of mini-courses (or plan to skip one of them and enjoy time to catch up with friends), and rides to classrooms in Duke, Hall of Letters, and Larsen will be available.

Please join them in these exciting learning environments.

2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. // Activities On and Off Campus
Location: Various

Might you want to watch a film made by Johnston alums? Now’s your chance. Perhaps a trip to the new e-sports arena for a demo and time to game is just what you need. That will be available as well. A campus scavenger hunt is in the works pointing out new features to our local environment. This would also be a great chance to visit with friends, catch up with professors, go out for a coffee, take a trip to an old favorite location, or stop into one of the many new shops, bars, and restaurants in Redlands. This would be a great time, as well, for you to plan your own rogue event on or off campus!

Planned activities include:

MAKER SPACE // Iyan-Barrera-Sandri ’08 ’15 ’24 will give demos of the University’s Maker Space from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. You’ll also be able to pick up a special gift – a Renewal 55 token with your choice of mascot! Many thanks to Iyan-Barrera-Sandri, who graduated with an emphasis in Astrobiology and Science Fiction.

E-SPORTS FACILITY // Interested in gaming? Come visit the new e-sports facility at 2:30 p.m. We have arranged for a demonstration of the new gaming space on campus. Come see what the excitement is all about, sit down, pick up a controller, and game away! The demonstration will begin at 2:30 p.m., but you can visit the space (in what used to be called University Hall) any time during the day.

FILM SCREENING // Join your community members for a screening of Trevor Lincoln’s 2004 film Agent X. Film will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Holt Lobby. Trevor Lincoln is a 2004 Johnston graduate with an emphasis in Music, Film, & Art, where he wrote and directed the feature film Agent X: Genesis as his senior project. He then attended Chapman University, where he earned his MFA in screenwriting and directed the short film Have A Nice Day, which won several student film festival awards. Trevor now lives in Los Angeles, where he works in post-production for various streaming services, while producing his own video content for YouTube and Twitch.

OPEN MIC // In front of Bekins, we’ll have a microphone and an amplifier for those who would like to share their own talents with the community. Perhaps you sing, play an instrument, write poetry, have stream-of-consciousness musings, do improv, or something else. Please feel free to share with others at the live mic, which will be on for the duration of our Activities On and Off Campus time.

SOBER MEETING SPACE // During this time, we have dedicated the Doug Bowman Meditation Room, in Bekins 1, for those who wish to meet and gather in a sober space. A formal meeting has not been planned, but the space is dedicated to both formal and informal gatherings.

VISIT TO THE CHEECH MUSEUM // Did you know comedian Cheech Marin is one of the world’s foremost collectors of Chicano art, and exhibits from his collection live at the Riverside Art Museum? It's true! Take this opportunity to visit The Cheech on Saturday afternoon with other alums. If you'd like to join, purchase a ticket for February 17 (2:30 - 4:45 p.m.) on the museum website: https://riversideartmuseum.org/visit/the-cheech-marin-center-for-chicano-art-culture/. Check in with Maritza Valenzuela ’00 JC regarding carpooling opportunities!

5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. // Break Time

After and early start and so many activities, we’ll all need a break before the evening’s festivities.

6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. // Environment: Dinner Location: Orton Center (remarks from the program are available via live-stream: JOHNSTON RENEWAL 55)

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

Please join us in the Orton Center for our formal dinner. Alum speakers, College of Arts & Sciences Dean Justin Rose, President Krista Newkirk, and Director Tim Seiber will share remarks about the current Johnston environment, including those traditions we continue to cherish and support, and ways in which we might evolve into the future. A coursed meal will begin with a charcuterie board, followed by soup and salad, choices of entrée including chicken, short rib, and braised seitan (vegetarian/vegan), and finishing with a crème brule and maple pana cotta (vegan). A cash bar will be available for those who choose to drink.

We’ll be decorating Orton in an abundance of plants, green linens, and other décor. While there is no dress code for this event, we have been inspired, in part, by William Blake: “When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy/And the dimpling stream runs laughing by;/When the air does laugh with our merry wit,/And the green hill laughs with the noise of it” whose ideas are consonant with our anthem, “as long as your havin’ a good time.” If you feel like it, come dressed in your greens!

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. // Community Meeting
Location: Valencia Room (available via live-stream: JOHNSTON RENEWAL 55)

The Environment: Johnston that we continue to nourish is in many ways deeply connected to the past and present, but it also must have a vision about what to carry through into the future. The University of Redlands has recently announced the acquisition of Woodbury University in Burbank, California. New programs and a new physical campus will become part of the University, and thus, part of Johnston. How can we imagine an intentional living-learning community that spans place? What learning methods and goals must be preserved as the central mission of a Johnston learning experience, and what innovations might be necessary to feed out beloved Johnston as it grows into a wild and different environment? Please help us think about these questions as a community. Of course, other topics that come to mind are up for discussion as well.

10:45 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. // Memorial Service
Location: Memorial Chapel

Honoring those who we have lost, not just in the years between the 50th Renewal and today, but also in our collective pasts, is an important part of our Renewals. This year, Rabbi Patricia Karlin-Neumann ’76 JC and Lorraine Hedtke ’78 JC will host an event that helps us cherish and remember community members who cannot be with us. They will be joined by current Johnston student Angela Bozman ’25, who will play flute arrangements to facilitate our remembrances.

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. // Director’s Brunch
Location: Orton Center (remarks from the program are available via live-stream: JOHNSTON RENEWAL 55)

Spanning decades and different iterations of Johnston, many directors of the center have helped steer the community through and into new territories of learning, and new ways of “doing Johnston.” Tim Seiber has asked Yash Owada, Kathy Ogren, Kelly Hankin, and Julie Townsend to share reflections about the Johnston Environment they supported, and what we might hold onto for the next 55 years.

Bill McDonald will also share remarks about directors who are no longer with us. During brunch, we’ll leave the mic “hot” so that community members who wish to can share their thoughts as we wind down our weekend. At the end, Tim Seiber will share thanks and well wishes as we close Renewal 55. For those 21 and over, a champagne and mimosa cash bar will be available.
